Amistad Reservoir is a reservoir on the Rio Grande at its confluence with the Devils River 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Del Rio, Texas, USA. The lake is bounded by Val Verde County on the Texas side of the international border, and the state of Coahuila on the Mexican side of the border. The reservoir was formed in November, 1969 by the construction of Amistad Dam to provide flood control, water conservation, irrigation, hydroelectric power, and recreation to the area. The dam and lake are managed jointly by the governments of the United States and Mexico through the International Boundary and Water Commission. The name of the dam and lake is the Spanish word for "friendship". The lake is also refer to Lake Amistad. Since the Lake was able to secure the popular ESPN Bassmaster fishing tournaments (considered by some as the NASCAR of fishing[citation needed]), Amistad Reservoir, as well as Del Rio, Texas, have becoming increasingly popular with both tourists and homeowners. Some of the pro fisherman have purchase homes in the lake area, as well as some members of ESPN TV. In the works is a Resort complex that will consist of a 12-story hotel & condominium tower. Also a shopping center that will include a 25,000sf food store along with restaurant and stores. A Texas firm is proposing to build a 12-15 acre water park to be called Border Island water park. Luxury apartments are also being planned. With the growth of the Lake Amistad and Del Rio a proposed second high school is to be build in the lake area and is rumored to be named Del Rio Northlake High School. The Del Rio Loop which is being constructed around Del Rio and will connect to the Lake Amistad area will bring tremondous growth. Rumors of Sam's Club along with Target, hotels, restaurant and shopping centers are in the early planning stage between Del Rio and Lake Amistad area known as the "Y" where the loop is going to connect. eventually the Lake Amistad area will become a big tourist destination that will become the Oasis of the Middle Rio Grande. In 2009 the city of Del Rio, Texas will begin work on expanding the airport terminal which is currently serviced by Continental airlines. Once the expansion is completed the terminal will be able handle passangers arriving in a jet the size of a boeing 737, this will benefit the Lake Amistad, Texas area.
